Why Domestic Seafood is the Most Sustainable Option

Here in San Diego, we are fortunate to be surrounded by an abundant and diverse marine ecosystem. Our ocean is home to a myriad of seafood options, offering not only delicious delicacies but an opportunity to make a positive impact on our environment. When it comes to making sustainable seafood choices, there’s no better option than going local.
In addition, the United States is a world leader in sustainable fisheries management and has the most robust and transparent environmental standards in the world. Regulations are designed to ensure that fish populations thrive, not just for today but for generations to come. The Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act is the primary law that governs marine fisheries management in US federal waters. This law aims to prevent overfishing, protect habitats, and minimize bycatch – the unintended capture of non-target species. By opting for seafood caught in the US, you’re supporting a system that prioritizes responsible fishing practices, minimizes bycatch, and helps rebuild depleted stocks.
Unfortunately, most of the seafood consumed in the US is still imported – up to 80% – much of it from countries that have less rigorous environmental and human rights regulations. Imported seafood is often cheaper and easier to find, but there are unseen costs to both the environment and the communities overseas. Additionally, a staggering 32% of seafood imported into the US is illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU). This means the seafood was not caught according to applicable local, regional, and international laws, the seafood caught was not reported or misreported, and/or the fishing occurred in areas or for fish stocks where there are no conservation or management measures. IUU fishing is a huge threat to the marine ecosystem and coastal economies.
So if you’re at a restaurant or market and seafood caught in San Diego waters isn’t available, rest assured that purchasing any seafood caught in the US is a good choice.
