Posted on October 15, 2023 by The Local Fish Team

Third generation fisherman Charlie Saraspe has been on the water since before he was born. We had the chance to chat with him about his favorite species and some of the challenges he faces on and off the water.

NAME: Charlie Saraspe

BUSINESS NAME: Saraspe Seafoods

VESSEL NAME: Sarah Renee

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FISHING?
Family. My family has been doing it  for three generations. I’ve been doing it since I was born.

WHAT SPECIES DO YOU FISH?
I fish Spot Prawn, Spiny Lobster, White Seabass, Yellowtail, Bluefin Tuna and Rockfish.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN YOUR JOB?
A declining fishery, overregulation, pressure from the sportfishing industry as well as the commercial industry. Fuel cost and access to ice. We don’t have access to good facilities the way other ports outside of San Diego do such as ice, space to unload fish and gear storage.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE FISH TO COOK AND EAT, AND HOW?
Seared Bluefin Tuna
