Ocean Stewardship Standards : In addition to the overarching guiding principles, fishermen are strongly encouraged to adopt the Local Fish’s Ocean Stewardship Standards. These standards are designed to foster a sense of responsibility towards our oceans, ensuring the availability of fish stocks for generations to come. The Ocean Stewardship Standards include:  to be a good steward of the ocean and ensure there are fish stocks available for future generations of fishermen. These include:

  • Adhering to State and Federal Fishing Regulations: Ensure strict compliance with both state and federal fishing regulations and actively participate in initiatives aimed at improving management systems.
  • Minimizing Environmental Impact: Implement methods that minimize the environmental impact of fishing activities and take measures to prevent by-catch, especially of endangered and protected species.
  • Ethical Sourcing Standards: Uphold ethical sourcing standards, which include fair and equitable employment practices, transparency regarding the origin of catches, and respect for cultural traditions and knowledge.
  • Supporting Research and Conservation: Contribute to ongoing research initiatives and conservation efforts to protect marine ecosystems and species. Collaborate with local organizations, scientists, and authorities to actively participate in projects that advance the understanding and preservation of San Diego’s aquatic environments.
  • Promoting Education and Awareness: Inspire fellow fishermen and community members to become informed about sustainable fishing practices and the importance of responsible seafood consumption. Share your knowledge and experiences to raise awareness.
  • Sourcing from Healthy Stocks: Source seafood from healthy stocks and employ methods that allow populations to replenish themselves.
