Introducing the San Diego Fishermen’s Working Group: A Fishermen-Led Initiative for a Sustainable Future
The San Diego Fishermen’s Working Group (SDFWG) is a fishermen-led initiative focused on ensuring the sustainability of the fishing industry in San Diego. By advocating for the region’s commercial fishermen, the SDFWG aims to elevate fishing’s role in the community, emphasizing its importance to food security and the local economy.
Who Are They
SDFWG is a collective voice for San Diego’s commercial fishing community, with a nine-person Board of Directors representing different fisheries and fishing methods. This diversity ensures that all sectors have a voice in policy-making and industry advancement.
A Legacy of Advocacy
The SDFWG grew out of the Fishermen’s Marketing Association San Diego (FMASD), founded ten years ago to strengthen the relationship between local fishermen and the public. Thanks to a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, FMASD is transitioning into a self-sustaining organization under the SDFWG’s leadership.
Key Initiatives
- Unified Marketing Strategy: SDFWG is working to create a marketing strategy that highlights the environmental, economic, and nutritional benefits of locally caught seafood, raising public support for local fishermen.
- Critical Infrastructure Development: Investments in infrastructure will ensure the continued success and growth of the industry, improving facilities and logistics to keep up with market demands.
- San Diego Seafood Festival: This festival celebrates the region’s fishing heritage, promoting sustainable fishing practices and local seafood.
- West Coast Fish Auction: SDFWG is establishing the first-ever fish auction on the West Coast, allowing fishermen to directly sell their catch, ensuring fair prices and strengthening the seafood supply chain.
Building Awareness and Support
The group strives to build awareness and support for San Diego’s commercial fishermen, highlighting their role as both ocean stewards and key contributors to the region’s economy and culture. Their work aims to foster a deeper connection between the community and the people who provide local seafood.
A Sustainable Future
The SDFWG is committed to creating a sustainable future for the fishing industry by strengthening infrastructure, increasing public awareness, and advocating for sustainable fishing policies. Their efforts aim to ensure that the industry remains vital to the region’s economy and culture for generations.
